When our dreams have power it is She who comes. White buffalo Calf Woman. In autumn She comes when the grass and sun are one. In winter She comes with the scent of new wonder. In summer She brings joy and children’s laughter. In all seasons we sing Her song. And hear Her voice in return. It is spoken. This painting started as a commission piece for a family who had just discovered their Native American roots, specifically Lakota from Brulé. The family wanted their daughter to learn and understand her heritage so I created a painting with White Bufallo Calf Woman and a line of Buffalo across the canvas. Diane wrote a story for the little girl. The family were delighted and so was I. I was so delighted that I had to paint it again. This time I painted the Three Sisters, Corn, Beans, and Squash who all represent the bounty of White Buffalo Calf Woman. The sky is late afternoon turning the Black Hills orange and yellow with the coming sunset. The grasses are full of promise with the colors of their flowers. The Maidens call, and Buffalo come, bringing with them a promise of continuing good life and prosperous times. This is one of my favorite paintings I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did creating it. -Wendy Wells-Bailey
